CONFIRMED: Michael Vick’s New “Member of [the] Family”

After admitting five years ago to running a dog fighting operation, Michael Vick has confirmed that he once again owns a dog. In a statement from his publicist Vick put to rest the rumors that began swirling after he tweeted a photo of his home featuring a box of dog biscuits on a table (pictured right).

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”

Vick’s decision to own a dog, while never referred to as such in his statement, is legal now that his probation is complete. Still, this news is proving divisive, even among members of the animal welfare community. On one extreme, animals lovers say in no uncertain terms that Vick should be banned from owning dogs for life and liken this news to a pedophile not being allowed near children. However, other animal welfare advocates claim that this dog is safe since it will now be under the microscope by those waiting to see if Vick returns to his former cruelties.
